At A Glance
Maddox is an 8-month-old Belgian Malinois who enrolled in a 3-Week Board and Train with Off Leash K9 Training under the care of Mandy. Maddox had recently been rehomed, so his program began with acclimation and relationship-building lessons before transitioning into a full training plan. His owners wanted a strong obedience foundation and help with mild reactivity that was starting to escalate around dogs and people. The program focused on obedience, structure, and better decision-making around triggers.
Dog: Maddox
Breed: Belgian Malinois
Age: 8 months
Location: Northern Virginia
Program: 3-Week Board and Train (Obedience + Reactivity Focus)
Trainer: Mandy
Main Focus: Obedience foundation, mild reactivity around dogs and people, structure, clearer boundaries
Outcome: More reliable obedience, improved response around triggers, better structure, and stronger handler engagement
The Challenge
Maddox came from a rehoming situation, which can create uncertainty and stress even for a naturally confident working breed.
Before training, Maddox:
- Was still adjusting to a new home and routine
- Needed a strong obedience foundation
- Showed mild reactivity around dogs and people that was beginning to build
- Needed clearer boundaries and structure
- Had lower confidence contributing to reactive behavior
His owners wanted a plan that would help Maddox settle, learn reliability, and make better choices around distractions and triggers.
The Training Approach
Maddox began with a few lessons focused on relationship-building before starting the full 3-week program. That early groundwork helped create trust and engagement, which is essential for Malinois training.
Training focused on:
- Building relationship and engagement through food, play, and toys
- Teaching foundational obedience commands with consistent follow-through
- Creating structure and predictable routines to support calmer behavior
- Controlled exposure to triggers (dogs and people) with obedience work
- Teaching Maddox how to make better decisions instead of reacting
- Strengthening leash skills and heel work to improve control in public
The goal was to build reliable obedience first, then apply it in the environments where Maddox needed it most.
The Results
Over three weeks, Maddox began building stronger obedience and better responses around triggers.
What improved:
- More reliable obedience foundation (come, sit, down, place, heel)
- Better engagement and responsiveness to the handler
- Improved structure and clearer boundaries
- More controlled reactions around people and dogs
- Better decision-making under distractions
Maddox stayed energetic and driven, now paired with more structure and clearer expectations that support long-term success.
Trainer Insight
With recently rehomed dogs, relationship comes first. Once trust and engagement are established, obedience becomes much easier to install and reactivity improves because the dog has clearer guidance and structure.
