At A Glance
Joy is an 8.5-month-old puppy who enrolled in a 2-Week Board and Train with Off Leash K9 Training under the care of Louis. Joy is a loving, friendly dog, but she had too much energy and her owners struggled to manage her in public. Outings like dinner were hit-or-miss, and Joy would get overly excited around guests and other dogs. Her program focused on foundational obedience, follow-through, and better public manners.
Dog: Joy
Age: 8.5 months
Location: Northern Virginia
Program: 2-Week Board and Train
Trainer: Louis
Main Focus: Public manners, overexcitement, jumping on guests, excitement around other dogs, obedience reliability
Outcome: Stronger obedience foundation, better follow-through, calmer behavior in public, and more manageable outings
The Challenge
Joy was sweet and social, but her excitement made it hard to include her in everyday life.
Before training, Joy:
- Was hit-or-miss during public outings like dinners
- Had too much energy and lacked a way to be managed in public
- Jumped on people at times, especially during excitement
- Got overly excited when seeing other dogs
- Was not aggressive, but her excitement was hard to control
- Knew a little bit of obedience, but didn’t reliably follow commands when asked
Her owners wanted to be able to take Joy out confidently, knowing she could behave calmly and respond to commands.
The Training Approach
Joy completed a 2-Week Board and Train designed to build structure and reliable obedience for real-world situations.
Training focused on:
- Teaching core obedience commands like sit, down, place, heel, and come
- Building follow-through so Joy responds when asked, not only when she feels like it
- Improving impulse control to reduce jumping and overexcitement
- Teaching calm public manners so Joy can settle during outings
- Increasing engagement so Joy focuses on the handler even around other dogs
- Practicing in higher-distraction environments to proof obedience for real life
The goal was to keep Joy friendly and fun while making her manageable and enjoyable in public.
The Results
Over the two weeks, Joy began showing better structure and clearer obedience responses.
What improved:
- More consistent obedience and follow-through
- Better ability to settle and behave during outings
- Reduced jumping through improved impulse control
- Improved focus around other dogs
- More predictable public manners for restaurants, patios, and busy places
Joy stayed loving and happy, now paired with more structure that makes taking her out much easier.
