At A Glance
Atlas is a 3-year-old Australian Shepherd who entered a 2-Week Board & Train Program with Dean through Off Leash K9 Training Northern Virginia. Known for his high energy and excitement, Atlas struggled most with impulse control, jumping, and leash reactivity around other dogs. While friendly and affectionate, his overexcitement often made him difficult to manage in real-world situations. With Dean’s guidance, Atlas began building calmer responses, stronger leash control, and better focus around people, dogs, and everyday distractions.
Dog: Atlas
Breed: Australian Shepherd
Age: 3 Years Old
Location: Northern Virginia
Program: 2-Week Board & Train Program
Trainer: Dean
Main Focus: Impulse control, jumping, leash reactivity, obedience under distraction, engagement
Outcome: Improved focus, better control, increased obedience reliability under distraction
The Challenge
Atlas is a highly energetic and social dog who tends to become overstimulated in exciting environments.
Before training, he struggled with:
- Strong pulling on leash due to excitement
- Jumping on people during interactions
- Reactivity toward other dogs on leash (barking and lunging)
- Difficulty controlling impulses in stimulating environments
- Inconsistent focus when distractions were present
- Overexcitement masking obedience in real-world situations
Despite these challenges, Atlas showed good recall and responsiveness when off-leash in controlled environments.
The Training Approach
Atlas entered a structured 2-week board and train program focused on building impulse control and structured obedience.
Training focused on:
- Strengthening foundational commands (sit, down, place, heel, recall)
- Improving leash control in high-distraction environments
- Reducing jumping and overexcitement around people
- Teaching neutrality around dogs and external stimuli
- Reinforcing calm behavior before engagement
- Building consistency and handler focus under distraction
Dean worked with Atlas to redirect his high energy into structured obedience rather than reactive behavior.
The Results
After two weeks of structured training, Atlas showed noticeable improvements in control and responsiveness.
Key improvements included:
- Increased attention and engagement with handler
- Improved ability to remain seated and calm under direction
- Reduced jumping during interaction
- Better leash control and reduced impulsive reactions toward dogs
- Stronger obedience consistency in distracting environments
- Clear improvement in overall impulse control
A key milestone was Atlas calmly sitting and waiting for direction—something his owners had not consistently seen before.
Trainer Insight
Atlas is a smart, high-energy Australian Shepherd who needed better impulse control, clearer structure, and stronger focus around real-world distractions. Dean focused on helping Atlas redirect his excitement into calm obedience, improve leash behavior around other dogs, and respond more reliably when people or stimulating environments were present. His progress shows how structured training can help an energetic dog build better self-control, stronger engagement, and more dependable behavior in everyday situations.
