At A Glance
Petunia is a 2-year-old Boxer–Pit mix who completed a Board and Train program with Off Leash K9 Training under the care of Ian Galliano. Petunia was affectionate and playful, but she lunged at everything, squirrels, people, and other dogs, which made walks stressful and unpredictable. Her program focused on obedience structure, impulse control, and real-world handling reliability while keeping her loving personality intact.
Dog: Petunia
Breed: Boxer–Pit Mix
Age: 2 year old
Location: Northern Virginia
Program: Board and Train
Trainer: Ian Galliano
Main Focus: Lunging on walks, overexcitement, impulse control, obedience reliability, public manners
Outcome: Reduced lunging, improved control on walks, stronger obedience foundation, and continued progress toward service work
The Challenge
Petunia’s owner adopted her and quickly realized that while she was sweet, her excitement was turning into constant lunging in public.
Before training, Petunia:
- Lunged at squirrels, people, and other dogs
- Was overly eager to play and struggled with impulse control
- Made walks stressful and difficult to manage
- Needed stronger obedience and clearer boundaries
- Required a foundation strong enough to build long-term goals
Her owner wanted Petunia to be safer to handle and more reliable without losing the love and playfulness that made her special.
The Training Approach
Petunia completed a Board and Train designed to turn chaotic walk behavior into calm, controllable obedience.
Training focused on:
- Teaching foundational obedience with consistent follow-through
- Improving leash manners and walking control
- Building impulse control so Petunia could stay composed around triggers
- Distraction proofing around people, dogs, and moving animals
- Daily progress updates and videos to keep the owner informed and involved
- Creating a strong base that the owner could continue building on after pickup
The goal wasn’t to suppress Petunia’s personality, it was to give her clear structure so she could make better choices.
The Results
After training, Petunia returned home with a noticeable transformation.
What improved:
- Much better control on walks with reduced lunging
- Improved obedience and responsiveness
- Better impulse control around distractions
- Owner received a foundation that continued improving over the following months
- Petunia kept her loving, playful personality
With the strong foundation in place, her owner was able to continue progressing toward service-animal level goals.
Owner Reflection
“She came back a different animal but maintained all the love and play that made her special in the first place.”
Trainer Insight
Many dogs that lunge are not aggressive, they are overstimulated and under-structured. When you teach obedience around distractions and build impulse control, the dog can stay social and playful without becoming chaotic or unsafe.
