At A Glance

Remy is a nearly 2-year-old European German Shepherd who came into training with Off Leash K9 Training Northern Virginia with a solid foundation in obedience but needed more control around high-level distractions. She already understood commands including sit, down, and recall and had experience walking beside her handler. Her biggest challenges involved a strong prey drive toward deer, foxes, and coyotes, occasional leash pulling, and increasingly difficult responses when unfamiliar dogs charged toward her. Her owner’s long-term goal was to develop enough control and reliability to enjoy off-leash trail walks where appropriate.

Dog: Remy
Breed: European German Shepherd
Age: Nearly 2 years old
Location: Northern Virginia
Program: Dog Training Program
Main Focus: Prey drive, leash pulling, dog-related reactivity, recall, handler engagement, and off-leash reliability
Outcome: A stronger foundation for improved control around distractions and progress toward more dependable trail obedience

The Challenge

Remy was not starting training from the beginning. She had previously worked on obedience and already knew several useful commands.

Before training, Remy:

Her owner reported that Remy had been charged by other dogs on five occasions. During the first incidents, she was easier to control, but her responses became more difficult to manage after repeated encounters.

The owner did not describe Remy as generally unfriendly. In fact, she had previously trained successfully around other dogs and in busy public settings and was described as doing well with adults and children.

The Training Approach

Because Remy already had an obedience foundation, her training could focus more heavily on reliability around challenging distractions.

Training focused on:

The goal was not simply for Remy to know commands, but for those commands to remain useful when prey animals, unfamiliar dogs, or other strong distractions were present.

The Results

The provided footage describes Remy before training and does not include a detailed final progress update.

Her training was designed to improve:

Remy already demonstrated a useful obedience foundation, so the primary challenge was increasing the reliability of those skills when the environment became much more stimulating.

Specific claims about reduced prey chasing, improved reactions toward charging dogs, or reliable off-leash trail behavior should be confirmed through Remy’s completed training footage and trainer assessment before publication.

Trainer Insight

A dog can perform very well in structured environments and still struggle when faced with highly motivating distractions. For a German Shepherd with strong prey drive, wildlife such as deer, foxes, or coyotes can create a very different level of challenge than routine obedience practice.

Repeated negative encounters with unfamiliar dogs may also influence how a dog responds in future situations. In Remy’s case, her owner reported that she became harder to control after being charged multiple times. Training can strengthen handler engagement and obedience, but owners should continue managing dog interactions carefully rather than assuming those experiences have been completely resolved.

For off-leash trail goals, dependable recall and responsiveness around wildlife are especially important. Off-leash activity should only take place where permitted and when the dog can be managed appropriately for the environment.
