What to Expect in Your First Dog Training Class in Woodbridge, VA

Dog Training
Reading Time: 5 minutes

At Off Leash K9 Training NoVA, our team has trained more than 12,000 dogs across Northern Virginia and the Washington, DC area. With more than 700 verified Google reviews and 10 straight years voted best dog trainers in Virginia, we work with new clients every week.

If you are getting ready for your first session or are still deciding whether to start, experienced dog training in Woodbridge, VA, should give you a clear idea of what the first class involves. Knowing how that first lesson usually goes can make the process feel much easier from the start.

What Happens During Your First Training Session?

Your first session is a private, one-on-one lesson between you, your dog, and one of our certified trainers. There are no group settings in our private obedience programs. Your trainer will ask about your dog’s history, current behaviors, and your goals before introducing the first command in the sequence.

The session moves between trainer demonstration and owner participation. You do not just watch; you work with your dog directly under your trainer’s guidance. Most owners leave the first session with at least one command their dog is already responding to.

What Should You Bring to Your First Class?

Bring your dog, your current leash, and any relevant history: prior training, medical needs, behavioral concerns. Depending on the program you enrolled in, gear is included and handed to you at the first session.

Our Basic Marker Mastery program ($600, 4 weeks) includes a clicker, 15-foot leash, and slip lead. Our Basic Obedience Training program ($750, 4 weeks) and Basic and Advanced Obedience program ($1,075, 8 weeks) both include an e-collar and training leash. You do not need to purchase gear separately before arriving.

Does My Dog Need Any Prior Training Before Starting?

No. The majority of dogs that come through our programs have no prior training at all. Some have been through group classes without lasting results. Many are rescues with no known training background.

Our programs are built to meet your dog at whatever starting point they are at. Anand D. brought his dog Nala in, knowing nothing. After two weeks with our certified trainer, Dean, here is what he shared:

What Commands Will My Dog Start Learning First?

This depends on the program you choose, but most obedience programs begin with come, sit, down, and place. These foundational commands establish the communication framework that every additional command builds from.

Our Basic Obedience Training program covers come, sit, down, place, leash walking, and the off command over 4 weeks. Our 8-week Basic and Advanced Obedience program extends that into extended recall, heel, watch, and front. By the end of the 8-week program, your dog is responding to commands in real-world environments with distractions present.

What If I Am Hesitant About E-Collar Training?

E-collar training is not required across all of our programs. Our Basic Marker Mastery and Puppy Basic Marker Mastery programs ($600, 4 weeks each) use positive reinforcement only with a clicker and leash. No e-collar, no prong collar.

For owners who do start with an e-collar program, the hesitation usually resolves quickly once the method is explained in person. Reilly W. came into training uncertain about e-collar use. After four obedience classes with our certified trainer, Dean, this is what they shared:

What Is the Difference Between Private Lessons and Board and Train?

Private lessons mean you attend every session weekly alongside your dog. Programs run 4 or 8 weeks and are priced from $600 to $1,075. You train together each week, practice at home between sessions, and build the skills alongside your dog over time.

Board and train means your dog lives and trains with one of our certified trainers full-time during the program. Programs run 1 to 3 weeks and range from $1,700 to $4,500. Every board and train program includes a lifetime command guarantee and a private one-on-one handoff session at the end, where we walk you through every command before your dog comes home.

The right format depends on your schedule, your dog’s behavioral needs, and how involved you want to be during the training period.

What Happens After Your First Class?

Your trainer gives you a clear practice plan before you leave. You will know which commands to reinforce, how to reinforce them, and what to avoid doing between sessions. The consistency you build at home between classes is what makes training hold long-term.

After the full program, whether lessons or board and train, we do not consider training complete until you are confident in handling every command yourself. That is what the handoff is for.
